Junior football: Tiago keeps Bennett’s boys in the title race
UNDER 13: PETERBOROUGH Northern Star Red kept their slender Division One title hopes alive with a 1-0 win against Powerleague.
Tiago Nassunculo scored the goal for Star and the Portuguese wonderkid thought he had doubled the lead minutes later but saw his effort ruled out for offside.
The win moved Marvin Bennett’s side up into third place, but they still have plenty of work to do in the second half of the season as they remain six points behind leaders Malborne.
Bennett said: “The boys worked really hard as Powerleague pushed us all the way but in the end we got the three points. The whole team can be really proud of their performance.”
REIGNING Division One champions Hungate Yellow kept up the pressure on Malborne by beating Deeping 3-2.
Sam Bedwell-Byatt was the star of the show with two goals while Kieran Higgs netted the other in a tight game at Outgang Road.
At the other end of the Division One table, Whittlesey eased their relegation fears by beating Langtoft 4-1.
Sami Isenovic netted for Langtoft but two apiece from Tom Mucklin and Richie Townsend saw Whittlesey cruise to the points.
NETHERTON Owls could finally be poised to break into the top flight according to manager Dennis Neighbour.
After winning the League Cup in the Under 10 age group the Owls have spent the past three campaigns in the second tier, but all that could be about to change.
A thumping 10-2 win against Wisbech St Mary Purple saw the city side start the new year in explosive style and it was striker Bailey Pillin who provided the biggest bang.
Pillin scored five times against the sorry Saints and there were also goals for Alex Morgan (2), Callum Lytle, Callum Carr and an own goal as Netherton moved to within two points of the summit.
Neighbour said: “We are in pretty good shape at the moment and I think we must have a real shot at promotion this season.
“We have a very solid defence and forwards who can score goals.
“Bailey has scored 28 goals this season which is a wonderful effort and if we can keep putting in good performances I’m sure we will be there or thereabouts.
“But all we can really do is take it one game at a time as we have some very tough games still to play.”
TOP scorer Lui Tompsett was back among the goals as Thurlby opened the new year with a 4-0 win against Richard Scott Soccer School.
Tompsett struck twice for the Division three leaders who also had Jack Morgan and Jordan Laud on target as they moved five points clear at the top.
