Junior football: Northern Star will need a magnificent seven to go up
UNDER 13: | PETERBOROUGH Northern Star Black will have to win their last seven games if they want to secure a place in the top flight.
That’s the view of manager Lloyd Lockhead who guided his team to a 3-1 win at Holbeach that kept them a point clear at the top of the Division Two table.
Despite going a goal down, a Steven Jack strike saw Star back on terms before Massimo Rocchio headed home a Luke Stephenson free-kick for a 2-1 half-time lead.
After the break Tyler Roddis made the points safe when he turned home Zach Nunn’s excellent cross.
But even though his team continue to set the pace, Lockhead is well aware that with teams below them enjoying the luxury of games in hand, it’s win or bust from here on in.
He said: “It was a terrific performance at Holbeach and that was not just the forwards. Everyone played well and once again our defence and our goalkeeper were excellent in another big game.
“After a poor start to the season we’ve improved as the season goes on and in our last few games we have beaten Holbeach and Wasps who are two of the best sides in the division. But we have a real job on our hands to get promoted as the teams below us have games in hand so realistically we need to win all seven of our remaining games to leave ourselves in the mix.”
ANOTHER team with hopes of a place in Division One next season are Netherton Owls.
The Owls took on Glinton Blue on their new 3G pitch and despite being outplayed for much of the match, they came away with the points after a 2-1 win thanks to goals from Callum Lytle and Alex Morgan.
Manager Dennis Neighbour said: “Because of the cold weather we played on the new 3G pitch and I don’t know if that affected them but they were not good. Glinton really outplayed us and they will be disappointed not to have got something.
“We certainly felt fortunate to come away with the points. But that said we have played well and got nothing so it is swings and roundabouts I suppose.”
The win took Netherton up to second in the table, just a point behind Northern Star.
GOALS from Thomas Smith and Jack Richardson saw Glinton White emerge with a point after a 2-2 draw against a much improved Wittering side.
Last time the two teams met in Division Three combat, the Whites ran out comfortable winners but this time round boss Tony Kelly was more than happy with a point.
Kelly said: “Wittering have really come on through the season and a lot of credit must go to them for that. Either team could have won it and it was a very entertaining game but in the end a point each was probably fair.
“We have a lot to do now if we want to end in a promotion spot but I always felt it would go right down to the wire. This league is so competitive I am sure we will all be on the edge of our seats come the end of the season.”
