Junior football: Northern Star Blue keep title hopes alive
UNDER 11: PETERBOROUGH Northern Star Blue kept their Division One title tilt on track with a convincing display against Stamford.
Boyan Kostadinov led the way with two goals as Star beat the young Daniels 5-1 in their own backyard. Ethan Atkins, Alfie Ferguson and Filip Czerwonka were also on target for Star while skipper Adam Jordan netted the only goal for Stamford.
The win leaves the Blues three points behind league leaders Spalding but with three games in hand.
Spalding also got the new year off to a winning start as they beat Sawtry 8-0 while last season’s Red Zone winners, Glinton, also knocked in eight goals against Kings Cliffe.
Bradley Breen was the leading light for the village side as he rattled in a hat-trick while Matthew Sedgwick (2), Frazer Garner (2) and William Gore were also on target.
DEEPING Blue’s 100 per cent record in Division Two never looked in any danger as they beat Corby 3-0.
Goals for Lucas Kimpton (2) and Jamie Roe ensured the Blues made it nine wins from nine league games so far to extend their lead at the top of the table to six points.
Manager John Carver said: “Corby came into the game undefeated in league and cup so we knew we would be in for a tough game.
“And as they are new to our league it was a bit of a step into the unknown for us but I though the boys coped well.
“It was a really good, competitive game but I thought we deserved the win after another solid performance. We play Corby again soon in the semi-finals of the PFA Cup so I am sure they will be out for revenge then but we will be ready.”
At the other end of the Division Two table Thorpe Wood Red moved a point clear of the drop zone with a 2-1 win against Oundle.
Oundle are yet to pick up a point and goals from Jacob Hoffman and Scott Stejanovic made sure that miserable run continued as Thorpe Wood secured a 2-1 win.
SEB Ziabka and Kieran Symons both scored twice as Wisbech St Mary Yellows kept their place at the top of Division Three with a 5-0 win against Thorpe Wood Blue.
Man-of-the-match George Napier wrapped up the scoring for the Saints who have a two-point lead at the top but it’s Powerleague who look favourites for the title.
The powerful city side made it eight wins from eight games as they flattened Crowland.
Striking sensation Stewart Barrand led the way as he scored five goals while Ahmed Haider bagged a hat-trick for Powerleague in a 13-2 win.
LIAM Sandall hit a terrific treble as Holbeach kept their Division Four title hopes alive.
Harry Collishaw, Callum Matthews, Lewis Turner and Harry Machin were also on target in a 7-2 win against Malborne that keeps Holbeach third in the table.
