Junior Football: Jordan is so quick off the mark as Netherton start with a bang

UNDER 15: JORDAN McLeod scored just twice last season but on Sunday he managed to equal that mark in under four minutes as Netherton beat Oundle 7-0 in Division One.

Mcleod hit the first two goals for the reigning league and Northants Cup champions and Daniel Powell scored a hat-trick at the Grange as Netherton opened their account in sumptuous style.

Zak Warrener and Fraser Sturgess also netted for the home side, who according to assistant boss Derek McNally, are likely to be an even stronger outfit than they were 12 months ago.

He said: “It was nice to see Jordan grab a couple of goals as he doesn’t get too many and all in all myself and manager Steve Powell were delighted with the performance considering it was our first game.

“Over the summer we have added a few players, including Dan and Sam Wilson, who have been at Posh for the past few years. But they did originally start out with our club so it is nice to have them back.

“So overall we feel we have a stronger team than we had last season and we expect to be up there challenging for trophies again. Of course we know it will be tough with the likes of Yaxley and Wittering around but we will give it our best shot.”

n CROWLAND could well emerge as Division One’s surprise package in more ways than one after thumping Langtoft in their first game of the season.

Having won Division Three of the Junior Alliance, Graham Davies’ side had expected their first taste of Youth League football to be in Division Two.

However, after being bumped up into the top flight by the powers that be, Davies and his lads are determined to make the most of the opportunity, as they proved on Sunday when they smashed Langtoft 9-0.

In fairness to Langtoft they could only muster nine players, and Aaron Eyett (2), Nathan Parillon (2), Ryan Jackson, Jamie Casey, Kane Davis, Jamie Francis and Ashton Capes all took full advantage.

Davies said: “We were a little bit surprised to be in this league but we just have to get on with it now and try to cope with it the best we can. This game may have given us a bit of a false impression as they were down on numbers but we still had to play well to score nine goals. But we know there will be tougher games coming up so we have to be ready to fight for points to stay in this league.”

Crowland are currently on the look-out for defenders. Anyone interested should call Davies on 07808 632687.

n EYE have set their sights on the Division Two title this season and they couldn’t have got their bid off to a better start after a hat-trick of hat- tricks in a 13-0 win over Glinton B.

Man-of-the-match Cameron Overend, Cody Eldred and Charles Gerrard helped themselves to trebles while Daniel Pepper, Carl Wooley, Mikey McDonald and Corben Oldham were also on target.

Manager Jim Rainbow said: “I don’t really enjoy watching the lads run up massive scores like that but I was pleased with the performance and it bodes well for us as our target is definitely winning this league.”
