Under 9 Green Zone: IT is certainly a Happy New Year for Wasps.

The Stanground-based side claimed a first victory in Junior Alliance football in their opening outing of 2012.

A solitary strike from Justin Robinson - a player known as the team’s engine - was enough to secure success against near neighbours Park Farm at Fletton Avenue.

Robinson was on hand to provide the finishing touch in the second half after a fine cross from Aneurin Jones.

Manager Alison Parker said: “We could have won our first three games of the season but it didn’t quite go our way and we had to settle for draws.

“We’ve had a few losses since but it was nice to start the new year with that first win.

“Park Farm are a lovely team to play. They are very similar to ourselves in that they haven’t had the best season, but they show great sportmanship and attitude.”

Wasps keeper Thomas Tuffnell made a couple of good saves at the other end as one goal proved to be enough to settle the contest.

Under 9s - WONDERFUL Werrington Blue are celebrating the first title success of the local football season.

Keith Ferris’ blossoming talents have blown away the White Zone competition to secure the silverware with four matches to spare.

A 5-0 victory over Northborough in their first match following the Christmas and New Year break left the Blue boys in an unassailable position.

Manager Ferris said: “The lads have all been superb right from the word go.

“The fact they have sealed the title in the first weekend of January shows how well they’ve played.

“We have been helped by other results because a lot of teams have tripped each other up, but no-one could knock our record. “Ten victories in a row is a terrific achievement and we are determined to keep the winning run going to the end of the season.”

Daniel Adcock and Matthew Stilwell both struck twice for Werrington on Saturday. Ewan Drew hit the other goal.

And the Werrington focus will now shift towards completing an honours double.

They are safely through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup and have high hopes of adding to their honours collection.

Werrington Blue squad: Brandon Howson, Corey McDonald, Luke Ferris, Richard Paul, Ciaran Leadbitter, Sam Gardiner, Daniel Adcock, Matthew Stilwell, Ewan Drew.

THERE is still a long way to go in the two-horse race for the Yellow Zone title.

Deeping Amber and Paston Flyers are neck-and-neck in their pursuit of glory after both made triumphant returns to action at the weekend.

Josh Hogg, Owen Dalliday and David Hillson all struck twice as the Flyers zoomed past Netherton Buzzards 7-1 while Deeping saw off Thorney thanks to a solitary Sydney Witt effort.

And there’s also a thrilling title race developing in the Blue Zone where the top four teams are separated by a single point.

Oundle won 2-0 at Stamford to take over at the summit by virtue of a superior goal difference to a Corby team who were out of action.

Goals came from Sean Buckley and Archie Thorpe while Tyler Francis was outstanding at the back.
