Under 9 Green Zone: HAMPTON turned on the style as they took another big step towards the Green Zone crown.

Facing third-placed Powerleague, the league leaders made it look easy with Rio Smith (2), Reece Campbell (2), Bailey Baker (2), Harry McLaughlin and Shaun Bradley all on target at Beaumont Way.

The win keeps Hampton a point clear at the top of the table but with his side still to visit Corby, manager Jamie McLaughlin has predicted that the title chase could go down to a photo- finish.

He said: “I thought we were excellent again on Saturday. We knew Powerleague were missing a couple of players but they are still a very good side and we did well to beat them.

“Looking at the table the championship looks like it will go right down to the wire between us and Corby so it was important that we got three points from this fixture.

“But it wasn’t just about the football on Saturday. It was the first game back for Lemar Moore who has been suffering with leukaemia so it was lovely to have him back with us.”

Despite missing influential skipper Leon Ofosu it was Powerleague who took the lead when a Dennis Frroku corner was turned into the net by a Hampton defender.

The home side soon struck back through Campbell, however, before taking the lead for the first time thanks to a clever chip from Baker.

But at this stage Powerleague were competing well and were soon back on terms when Brandon White slalomed through the Hampton defence before firing into the bottom corner.

Hampton hit back again to restore their advantage before half-time when Powerleague keeper Jack Crane could only parry McLaughlin’s shot into the path of Baker who made no mistake from close range.

Early in the second half McLaughlin made it 4-2 with a tap-in after being set up following a mazy run from Jack Polson before Bradley made it 5-2.

White’s second of the game saw Powerleague pull it back to 5-3 but that was as close as they got as the home side ran away with it in the closing stages.

A few minutes before the end of the game there was a wonderful moment when everyone forgot about football as both sets of fans applauded Moore onto the pitch for his first game back since being diagnosed with leukaemia.

Powerleague manager Daniel White said: “We missed a couple of players but I cannot be too disappointed with my team as they have done really well this season and look well set to take third place.

“Fair play to Hampton, they are a really good team and I am sure they would make worthy champions.”
