NETHERTON endured a tough start to 2012 as they crashed out of the Northants Cup to Corby.

Despite going into the county cup clash in fine form after winning their last two league games before Christmas, the goals dried up for the city side on Sunday.

Manager Chris Sanderson said: “We had a really good little run before Christmas and I think the two-week break came at just the wrong time for us. We had been in good form but on Sunday there was definitely a bit of rustiness in front of goal.

“I don’t think Corby were a better team than us and it was a pretty even game overall but they took their chances and we did not.

“It was a shame but in many ways I am glad we got that performance out the way in the cup. Hopefully we can improve for our next league game.”

With a place in the fourth round up for grabs at The Grange, the Falcons started brightly with Reece Driscoll going close on a couple of occasions before George Smith shaved the post with his long-range effort.

But midway through the half the visitors took the lead and despite coming under sustained pressure from the home side, they held that advantage until half-time.

Shortly after the re-start Aaron Fife forced a fine save from the Corby goalkeeper but Netherton were left with a real mountain to climb when the Red Devils snatched their second of the game minutes later.

Feathers ruffled, the Falcons tried everything to find a way back into the game with Driscoll once again leading the charge.

But in the end time proved their greatest enemy as Corby held on for the win.

“On another day the result would have been different but we just need to get it out of our system and concentrate on the next league game against Pinchbeck,” added Sanderson.

“Our results in the league so far are not a reflection on the quality we have and hopefully we can build on our pre-Christmas form to string together some decent results and start moving away from the bottom of the table.”
