Under 10 Blue Zone: GUNTHORPE Navy all but guaranteed themselves the Blue Zone title after toughing out the points at Deeping.
Despite spending most of Saturday’s game on the back foot at Outgang Road, the Gunners battled hard to secure the win thanks to a first-half goal from Tom Game.
They now need just a point from their last three games to sieze the crown, but manager Craig Britton isn’t counting his chickens just yet.
He said: “To be fair to Deeping, they were probably the better team on the day and in the end we were lucky to come away with a win. We took the lead early and after that we spent a lot of the game defending hard and trying to nick another goal on the break.
“We were definitely not at our best but sometimes you have to grind out a result like that and we did that against Deeping. It was a massive result for us but we are not there yet and we won’t be until we have the point we need.”
Gunthorpe got off to the perfect start when Game finished expertly at the back post after being found by a pinpoint cross from Ben Parry.
But from then on, the first half belonged to Deeping as Seb Hoppe and Elliott Bellamy caused havoc down the Gunthorpe flanks.
Trying to make the most of the constant stream of crosses was Sam Bell who went close to an equaliser on several occasions only to be foiled by some fine goalkeeping from Brandon Large.
Despite riding their luck it was Gunthorpe who had the best chance to add to the score, however, after being awarded a penalty early in the second half only for Thomas Ford to save Callum Ford’s spot-kick.
At the other end Deeping continued to threaten but too often their attacks floundered on the defensive wall of Sebastian Britton, Peter James and Bradley Bowering.
And when they did get through luck was against them. Jamie Johnstone thought he’d scored the equaliser when his shot rattled into the bottom corner but unfortunately for Deeping the referee ruled the goal out after spotting a handball during the build-up.
It was hard luck on Deeping who deserved more for their efforts.
“I didn’t think we had much go for us on Saturday,” said manager Darren Ford.
“I think we match up pretty well against them and on another day I think we could have easily won the game.
“But fair play to Gunthorpe. They got the result they needed and they will be worthy champions.”
