Junior Football: Deeping launch their campaign in fine style

UNDER 16: DEEPING launched their bid for the Division One title in emphatic style with a convincing 6-2 win against newly-promoted Wittering Harriers.
Despite the Harriers taking a surprise early lead at Outgang Road, hat-tricks for Connor Pilbeam and Charley Sanders saw Deeping launch their campaign in style on Sunday.
And having missed out on the Division One title to Wisbech St Mary A for the past two years, the Lincolnshire lads must be confident of getting their hands back on the trophy.
Last season’s double winning Saints side have now quit the Peterborough Youth League for pastures new, and Deeping assistant boss Rick Levin knows his team will be among the favourites to fill the void.
He said: “Wittering gave us a bit of a fright on Sunday when they took the lead but we stuck to our guns and won well in the end.
“We knew they would have a fairly robust approach and we were determined not to get sucked into that kind of game and stuck to our passing principles.
“And if we can keep playing like that I am sure we will be very competitive this season. Obviously Wisbech St Mary leaving the league has opened things up a bit but I expect Stanground and Whittlesey will both mount very strong challenges so it should be an interesting season.”
n HAVING waited years for the chance to play top flight local football, Werrington announced their Division One arrival in style with a thumping 16-1 win at Yaxley.
On target for last year’s Division Two champions were Jordan Matthews (5), Ben Bonnett (4), Jonathan Pipe (2), Courtney Weekes-Pierre, Jason Dunn, Daniel Marriott, James Gardiner and Paul Jarman.
Manager Richard Marriott said: “I felt a bit sorry for Yaxley as they have lost a lot of players over the summer and they struggled but I was still pleased with our performance. We play Deeping and Whittlesey over the next month though and I am sure those games will give us a better picture of where we stand at this level.”
n Hunts Cup holders Stanground also got off to a solid start with Josh Rosser (2) and Sam Mancuso both on target in a 3-1 win against Stamford.
n IN the only games played in Division Two, Estover Park drew 4-4 with Netherton while Rippingale and Folkingham lifted the Doug Gamble Cup after beating Werrington B 2-0.
