Junior Football: Bourne will be a force says boss
UNDER 18: BOURNE boss Kevin Bellairs believes his side will be a force to be reckoned with in Division One this season despite an opening day defeat at the hands of Netherton.
Due to the way the Youth League works, Bourne have moved up from Division One of the Under 16 section straight into the Under 18 age group over the summer which means the young Wakes will be taking on stronger, older teams - like reigning league champions Netherton.
But despite going down 4-2 at the Grange on Sunday, Bellairs believes his side has what it takes to make the step up.
He said: “We had been looking good and had our two centre-halves not been away playing cricket we would have been a bit more solid at the back.
“We will continue to try to play nice football and I am sure it will pay dividends in the future even against these older teams.
“We have shown that we can still be a force to be reckoned with and will not be bullied on the pitch.”
Liam Morgan and James Beck both hit the target for Bourne but goals for Erick Makate (2) and James Ward (2) ensured the champions got off to a winning start.
n HAVING spent last season playing second fiddle to Glinton, Spalding chose the first day of the new Division One season to set the record straight with a 5-2 success.
Spalding lost out in both the League Cup and PFA Cup semi-finals to Glinton last season and despite going on to win Division Two, those defeats have clearly not been forgotten.
So it was a fired up Spalding side that took to the field in Glinton on Sunday and they got off to a dream start when Jordan Hayes put the visitors in front with a delightful lob after just 10 minuntes.
And pretty soon it was 2-0 when Alex Lyon gobbled up the rebound when new boy James Allen’s shot could only be parried by the Glinton keeper.
And by half-time Spalding were 3-0 to the good thanks to an Ash West header from a Hayes’ corner.
The home side did pull themselves back into the game after the break to make it 3-2 but a debut goal for Allen restored Spalding’s two-goal cushion before Sam Cowlen made the game safe late on.
