Hereward Cup football: Strikers shine bright in Netherton Cup win

TWO strikers played starring roles as Netherton claimed victory in the headline match of the opening round of the Hereward Cup.
Josh Moreman climbed off his sick-bed to hit a hat-trick while Adam Scotcher, who has been converted into a goalkeeper in recent weeks, shone with two saves in a penalty shoot-out as the Grange lads saw off Parkway.
Netherton triumphed 3-1 from the spot after the sides had shared six goals in normal time. Neither team could make a further breakthrough in extra-time.
Netherton co-boss Eddie Seddon said: “Adam has been playing in goal for the last few weeks and has done ever so well.
“We bought him a pair of new gloves and he was over the moon. He plays a lot of cricket so can catch a ball and he can save penalties too.
“We had to get Josh in to help us out. He was throwing up through the night but he still managed to score a hat-trick. We had to stick him in goal though for extra-time because he was feeling so rough.
“Adam went up front for a while but then back in goal for the penalty shoot-out.”
It was a match laced with controversy as Netherton, who had led 3-1, were left fuming by the manner of Parkway’s equalising goal to make it 3-3 late in normal time.
Seddon claimed referee Paul Gale allowed Parkway striker Graham to take a free-kick quickly while they were still organising their defensive wall.
To make matters worse midfield enforcer Ali Nyang was sent-off by Gale for his protests after the goal was allowed to stand.
But Netherton stood strong despite their numerical disadvantage and were able to celebrate victory when Ben Daly tucked away the crucial penalty.
Seddon added: “We’re just delighted to get through. It’s just about the toughest tie we could have had in the first round.”
Netherton Reserves just failed to join their stablemates in the quarter-finals after being edged out 6-5 by Premier Decorators in an 11-goal thriller.
It was a match that featured two hat-tricks courtesy of Netherton ace Adam Scott and Decor demon Kevin Holt.
Premier Division opposition also proved to strong for Division One rivals in two other first round clashes.
Coco’s men Luke Weston, Jonathan Sturgeon and Steve Starkey all thumped hat-tricks as their side blew away Woodston Rovers 15-1. Anthony Graves and Carl Griffiths both struck twice as Deeping Athletic overcame TSL Rangers by the rather more modest 5-1 socreline.
The trend of top-flight teams emerging victorious was bucked over at the Manor Leisure Centre where Peterborough Town claimed the scalp of Coates.
Luke Watkins, Tom Retzlaff and Tom Stocks found the net as the Division leaders grabbed a 3-2 triumph.
Kevin Gilbert bagged both Coates goals and, by his own admission, fluffed a sitter to complete his hat-trick.
Elsewhere John Scott bagged both goals as Farcet eased past Lancaster Bombers 2-0 in an all-Division One affair.

Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 12:17 PMSeddon complianed about a free kick being taken early against them, haha thats rich that is, a while back I played against netherton in a game and we were winning 2 . 1 with not long left, they took a free kick whilst our CB was down injured and the GK was adjusting the wall, the ref who had his back to them allowed the resulting goal dispite our obvious disagreement, glad to see they got a bit of payback, shame they went on to win though!
