Glorious Gow goals well worth a point
MALBORNE 2
POWERLEAGUE 2
Under 13 Division One
CAMERON Gow was the star turn as Powerleague proved a point against Malborne to keep their top flight title hopes alive.
In a cracking game full of attacking football between big local rivals, the midfield maestro scored two terrific long-range goals to cancel out efforts from James Ferris and Sam Shields.
And there can be no doubt it was Powerleague who were the happier of the two sides despite losing ground to reigning champions Hungate Yellow at the top of the Division One table.
Powerleague boss Duane Baker said: “It was a great game of football and I thought the boys did really well especially as we had a makeshift back four of Connor Baker, Kieran Forbes, Harry Bellamy and Dario Dinardo. They had to be very solid as once Malborne got the equaliser in the second half we were under the cosh for long spells.
“So overall I am happy with a point, it keeps us in it although I would say that Hungate are probably still favorites to win the league.”
After a bright start from both teams, it was Malborne who made the breakthrough when they were awarded a penalty after Liam O’Connor was judged to have been fouled in the Powerleague box. Over the past four years Ferris has never missed from 12 yards and he maintained that 100 per cent record by dispatching the kick with his usual aplomb.
But the visitors weren’t behind for long before Gow produced his first bit of magic when he cut in from the wing to lash an unstoppable drive into the top corner of the Malborne net.
The accuracy of the shot gave Maki Zivotic no chance and the Malborne keeper was left helpless again when Gow repeated the trick with another belter just before halftime.
If the visitors dominated the first half, however, it was Malborne who had the upper hand after the break. And with 15 minutes to go they got the goal they deserved when Shields headed home the equaliser from a Ferris inswinging corner.
Josh Stubbs then forced a fine save from Declan Bonsor as Malborne pushed for the winner while at the other end Reuben Eyles thought he’d won it only for his ‘goal’ to be ruled out for offside.
Malborne boss Andy Stubbs said: “We won the Northants Cup last season and for my money teams like Powerleague, Hungate and Northern Star are every bit as good as anything we faced in that competition - that’s testament to the quality in this division and you could see that on Sunday, it was a really exciting game.
“A point was probably a fair result although in the second half I thought we had enough chances to win it.”
