AFC Stanground moved off the bottom of the Peterborough Premier Division in spectacular style on Saturday (October 3).

The city side smashed fellow strugglers Leverington Sports 8-1 to register just a second win in 10 outings since their elevation from Diviision One.

Liam Whaley cracked a hat-trick with Grant McClean (2), Tom Staggs, Josh Staggs and Sam Cross also on target.

There are three teams now below Stanground, including Leverington, and all three received weekend drubbings.

Riverside, who had shown signs of improvement in recent weeks, were crushed 9-2 at home by Holbeach United Reserves and Crowland Reserves were battered 7-2 by Netherton United at the Grange.

Dwayne Rankin scored twice for Netherton with Ben Daly, Herbie Panting, Tom Randall, Adam Scott and Craig Spink also finding the back of the net.

Netherton have lost lost just once this season and are now fifth, but they are five points behind leaders Moulton Harrox having played two games more.

Moulton made it seven wins out of seven this season after seeing off Thorney 3-0 thanks to goals from Benjamin Allen, Thomas Carsdell and Joe Townsend.

Second-placed Peterborough Sports kept up the pressure as a debut goal for Lewis Mcmanus was enough for a 1-0 win at Stilton United.

And keep an eye out for pre-season title favourites Whittlesey Athletic. They are moving smoothly through the gears and they despatched in-form Langtoft United 5-1 on Saturday.

The division’s top scorer, big Matt Heron, claimed a hat-trick to make it 15 goals for the season. Adam Piergianni and Jack Bates were Whittlesey’s other scorers.

ICA Sports ended a poor run of results with a 5-2 win at Sawtry. Andy Wayte scored twice.
