Draw is enough to land Navy the title

FOUR years of hard work paid off as Gunthorpe Navy held Wasps to a 2-2 draw to claim the Blue Zone title.
Wasps needed to beat Gunthorpe on Saturday to stand any chance of overhauling the runaway leaders and they gave a good account of themselves at Campbell Drive with goals from Louie Venni and Liam Taylor.
But Kieran Driscoll-Freeman came to his side’s rescue with a decisive double to spark wild celebrations in the Navy camp. After four years trying to win a trophy, manager Craig Britton was understandably proud of his young guns.
He said: “There were a few nerves when Wasps equalised with a few minutes to go because if they had won they could still have caught us, but we held on. It was a great result for us and a perfect way to secure the league title.
“But it has been a season-long effort from all the boys. They have done themselves and the club proud.
“They have been together for four years working towards this point and they really deserve it. Hopefully we can now go through the rest of the season unbeaten.
“There is no way we will be taking our foot off the gas. We still have Netherton to play and they are fighting for second so we owe it to the rest of the league to keep playing right to the end of the season.”
Gunthorpe’s title winning squad are: Brandon Large, Bradley Bowering, Tomi Ojunyoye, Sebastian Britton, Callum Ford, Ben Parry, Tom Game, Peter James, Harrison Skinner and Kieran Driscoll-Freeman.
n POWERLEAGUE are also closing in on a title triumph after they moved six points clear at the top of the Red Zone table.
Bradley Simpson and Kristian Frank both netted twice in a 6-1 win against Thorney. Liam Catton and Owen Clarke were the other lads on target for Powerleague.
n IN the White Zone, Holbeach beat Bourne Red 6-1 to keep their promotion hopes alive.
Cameron Oku and Ewan McCracken both scored twice while Joseph Rickerby and skipper Bradley Whitmore completed the scoring to keep the young Tigers four points behind second-placed Bourne Clarets with a game in hand.
n PARKSIDE Blue remain on course for the Green Zone title despite being held to a 1-1 draw at Woodston.
Giovanni Da Rocha netted for Woodston but a goal from Jake Fitzgerald saw the league leaders rescue a point which keeps them eight points clear of Paston Flyers after they beat Wittering 3-2.
