Football: Girl power at Sawtry as 400 do battle

FOUR hundred budding young female footballers from 12 different counties converged on Sawtry on Saturday.

FOUR hundred budding young female footballers from 12 different counties converged on Sawtry on Saturday. They made up the 56 teams that did battle in the Roy Green Cup as Greenfields became a sea of girls' football talent.

The action was staged in four age groups with winning teams coming from as far afield as Rugby and Coventry.

Sawtry official Steve Purnell was thrilled with the way the club's second staging of a girls' tournament went.

He said: "We first did something last year and this tournament was on a much bigger scale.

"The intention is to make it an annual event and we will look at increasing the number of teams and age groups again next year.

"There is certainly the demand there and we have received good support from teams entering."

Rugby took the Under 10 spoils after a nerve-jangling 5-4 penalty shoot-out success over Ise Lodge following a 1-1 deadlock in their final duel.

That was one of three showpiece clashes settled from the spot. Cambridge City were crowned Under 11 champions after pipping Kettering 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Nottinghamshire side Linby Ladies held their nerve to see off Hungate in the Under 12 decider. They were 3-1 victors from 12 yards after another goalless game.

The only final to be settled in open play came in the Under 13 bracket where Coventry side Coundon Court denied Linby a tournament double with a 2-1 verdict.

Locally-based Women's Premier League ace Kelly Bingham, who plays for Watford Ladies, was on hand to dish out the trophies.

Sawtry are keen supporters of the growing girls' game. Anyone interested in trying out the sport can contact Steve Purnell on 07964 496259 or email steve.purnell@sawtrycolts.org
