DARREN Ferguson must see off stiff competition to capture his latest transfer target – from his own father Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.Peterborough United made an offer for Stockport's 17 year-old central defender Josh Thompson over the weekend. Thompson spent a week on trial at Manchester United towards the end of last season and the Premier League champions are believed to retain an interest in the player.
Thompson made one of his six Stockport appearances at London Road last April. He has also spent time on trial at West Brom.
Posh boss Ferguson said: "We were aware of Josh before he played against us. He's one of the top young defenders in the country right now, along with Ryan Bennett at Grimsby.
"We've made an offer and I believe we have a good chance of getting him. He was on trial at United last season and at West Brom, and I know both clubs were impressed.
"But as far as I know we are the only ones to have made a bid so far. Josh is our sort of player. He's very talented and yet capable of great improvement."
Thompson made his Stockport debut in January after graduating through the club's youth set-up. He is 6ft 4ins, but very quick and athletic.
Stockport are currently in administration and without a manager. Posh have already signed winger Tommy Rowe from County this summer for a fee in the region of 200,000-300,000.
New signings Rowe, Toumani Diagouraga and Lee Frecklington will report with the rest of the first-team squad for the start of pre-season training tomorrow.
The only absentee will be goalkeeper Joe Lewis who will meet up with the rest of the players next Monday when they fly out to Marbella for a training camp.
