DARREN Ferguson described Posh's promotion day as the greatest achievement of his football career.Posh clinched an automatic promotion spot in League Two with a 1-0 win at third-placed Hereford courtesy of a flying header from midfielder Dean Keates.
The win predictably sparked wild celebrations in front of the 1,100 travelling fans and left the Posh manager a very proud man.
Ferguson, who won a Premier League winner's medal with Manchester United, a promotion and scored a goal in a cup final in his playing career, said: "This surpasses anything I've ever achieved in football. To win promotion in my first full season is amazing, but really it's a fantastic day for the whole club.
"I'm so pleased for the players, the supporters and the chairman because they've all supported me tremendously all season.
"The players have been incredible. There are a lot of young lads in our squad who deserve to enjoy the experience and the beauty of it is they will only get better.
"My staff have been brilliant as well and I have to pay special credit to the chairman. He couldn't be at the game, but he was on the phone as soon as the final whistle went and he's obviously a very happy man
"He deserves a lot of praise for the way he's given me everything I've asked for, but it's been a brilliant season all-round."
Posh had to survive some nerve-jangling moments before securing their historic victory at Edgar Street, but the title now looks beyond them following MK Dons' 3-2 win at Stockport.
Ferguson added: "I have sent my congratulations to Dons manager Paul Ince as they secured promotion as well and it will be tough to beat them to the title now.
"But it was all about promotion for us this season and to achieve it with a couple of games remaining is a great effort.
"We showed good composure and good quality to bounce back from the disappointment of last week and the goal was very special.
"Chris Whelpdale sent over a great cross and it's another superb header from the giant Keatesy. We could have scored further goals, but we also had to defend well which we did.
"Tommy Williams has come in and done a great job, but really we didn't have a weak performance in the side.
"In fact no-one cold deny that we deserve to go up. We've played some good football and always looked to attack."
Williams replaced Jamie Day, who picked up a hip injury in training, at left-back.
Posh are now four points behind MK Dons with two games of the season remaining.
