Farrell insists he can still be a flying winger

DAVID Farrell is still the dangerously dashing winger that wowed the London Road faithful for almost a decade – he just can't do it as often these days! The 37 year-old Posh legend – the owner of some rocket heels and a man with a habit of scoring stunning goals – will be strutting his stuff at the Vic Couzens Stadium next season after becoming the most high-profile arrival in new manager Tuncay Korkmaz's Daniels revolution.
Farrell insists he still possesses the attributes that made him such a star attraction during his Posh pomp and is relishing the prospect of lining up in Stamford colours.
And returning to non-league football in recent times after a long professional career holds no fears for the Spalding-based star.
Farrell started out in this sphere with Redditch United in the early 1990s before being snapped up by Aston Villa.
He said: "Don't get wrong, footballers are always going to lose a bit of their edge as they get older, but I don't feel as though I have slowed down.
"I definitely don't think I have lost my pace, but I can't use it quite as regularly any more. I can't still do it 15 times a game like Barry Fry used to want at Posh!
"I played in non-league before I got into the professional game so it hasn't been any sort of culture shock for me coming back down.
"I would be lying if I said it wasn't physical at this level and I have come up against plenty of sides that like to launch it, but there are teams that try to play football.
"You have to be really good at it to pull that style of play off and there is no reason to think we won't be able to do it at Stamford."
Farrell will certainly have plenty of familiar faces around. Goalkeeper Chris Wright, player-coach (and fellow former Posh man) Ben Sedgemore and striker Danny Matson have made the same summer move.
The last mentioned of those players actually played a part in setting up Farrell's switch. The winger added: "I know a few of the lads and I'm really looking forward to getting going.
"It all came about through Danny Matson, who I was with at Boston last season. He put 'Tunge' onto me, we had a chat and I signed.
"I'm really pleased to be able to join a relatively local club which was important to me at this stage of my career. I did talk to a couple of other clubs further away, but I'm very happy to be at Stamford."
And despite his advancing years, Farrell has no thoughts of ending his long playing career.
He does have dreams of eventually moving into management, but Farrell is not considering a move into the dug-out anytime soon.
He added: "I'm still loving my football just as much as I have always done.
"I haven't even thought about packing up. Every year I get hungry for the game after a few weeks away in the summer. When that isn't happening you know it is time to stop.
"You have to take things year-by-year. My aim is to come in and do well enough at Stamford and be asked to stay.
"I definitely want to go into management, but that is the future – all I am thinking about at the moment is carrying on playing.

Farrell's involvement in the beautiful game doesn't stop at playing these days. He also coaches the supremely successful Woodston Dynamo Blue Under 12 team featuring his son, Jake.
Farrell now combines his football duties with a day job lecturing at Boston College.
