Posh 4, QPR 1

October 23, 2001

League OneTHIS was quite possibly the best performance Posh delivered in 10 years of management under Barry Fry.

The pace and tempo of the Posh side was too much for the Londoners who were among the League One promotion favourites.

Steve Palmer did scramble the visitors in front in just four minutes, but Posh proceeded to dominate the contest in front of just under 7,500 fans.

Dave Farrell equalised with a stunning shot from the edge of the penalty area six minutes before the break and two more goals followed either side of half-time.

Neale Fenn kneed Posh ahead from a Tom Williams cross, Leon McKenzie made it 3-1 from a Farrell cross and five minutes before full-time Fenn scored his second goal direct from a free-kick with the help of a generous deflection and following the dismissal of QPR's giant defender Daniel Shittu.

Midfielder Richard Forsyth won the man-of-the-match award, closely followed by Jimmy Bullard.

It all had Evening Telegraph reporter Alan Swann drooling. He said: "Posh have officially gatecrashed the promotion party following a performance of brilliant fluency."

He was soon proved wrong. Posh were fifth after this win, but failed to win any of their next eight matches and finished the season in 18th place. QPR finished eighth.

Posh: Tyler, Joseph, Jelleyman, Edwards, Rea, Forsyth, Williams, Bullard, Farrell, Fenn, McKenzie. Subs Shields, Oldfield, Danielsson, Connor, French.

QPR: Day, Rose, Bruce, Palmer, Shittu, Bignot, Pacquette, Burgess, Bonnot, M'Bombo, Connolly. Subs: Griffiths, Thomson, Warren, Digby, McEwan.
