Diagouraga: 'Posh ambition was first-class'

POSH new boy Toumani Diagouraga admits that he jumped at the chance of moving to London Road after being impressed by the club's ambition. The French-born midfielder, who has been likened to former Arsenal star Patrick Vieira, yesterday completed his move from Hereford United for an undisclosed fee.

The fact Posh gave him a four-year contract shows just how highly the club rate the 22 year-old and the feeling is mutual.

Diagouraga said: "The ambition that the club showed was first-class and that persuaded me to join. Peterborough are going places and I am pleased to be here.

"I played against the club for Hereford last season and when the opportunity came about to talk to Peterborough I jumped at the chance.

"You could see that they had some very good players and the last two years have been very successful for the club and hopefully we can continue to push forward.

"I am pleased to be back in the Championship again. I was at Watford at this level and it has been good for me to play in League Two and League One, it was a learning curve."

Diagouraga, once linked with a move to Chelsea, made one appearance in the Championship for Watford as an 18 year-old. He was substituted at half-time of a 4-1 defeat at Burnley at the beginning of the 2005/06 season.

But he has since gone on to become a midfield powerhouse and in his first season of regular first-team football, following loan spells at Swindon and Rotherham, he helped Hereford win promotion - along with Posh - to League One in 2007/08.

He made 41 League Two appearances that season during a loan spell with the Bulls and scored in the home win over Bradford and the trip to Chester.

The 6ft 2in Paris-born player, who has Malian parents, then moved to Edgar Street on a free transfer last season and missed just one game as Hereford suffered relegation back into League Two. He scored two goals and also faced Posh twice.

Diagouraga will meet his new team-mates when they report for pre-season training on July 1, and will link up with winger Tommy Rowe, who has joined from Stockport, and midfielder Lee Frecklington who has made his loan move from Lincoln permanent.

Diagouraga added: "I had a very good time at Hereford and I am sad to leave them, but at the end of the day I had to do what is best for me and my career.

"These are exciting times for me now that I am a Peterborough player and I can't wait to get started."
