Deeping boss Dethick does the double

DEEPING SPORTS RESERVES 1 WHITTLESEY RES 0(PFA Junior Cup replay)

DEEPING chief Simon Dethick completed his own Saturday and Sunday PFA Cup double last night following this role reversal.

Last season Whittlesey ran out single-goal winners when these sides contested this final, but an early Jamie Harker strike settled the issue this time around.

It meant Dethick could add to the PFA Senior Cup crown he won with Sunday side Deeping Athletic 10 days ago. He said: "We were deserving winners without a doubt.

"The fact their goalkeeper was man-of-the-match confirms that and our keeper only had one real save to make right at the end. I'm over the moon to win two trophies in a season."

Dethick's description of Whittlesey stopper Alan Anker was correct. He pulled off a host of fine second-half saves to deny the star-studded Deeping attack of Ian Bradbury, Matt Farrington and Ashley Favell - players who normally perform at a much higher level but who were eligible due to not having appeared in the PFA Senior Cup.

Deeping keeper Ricky Dent made a spectacular late save to keep out a goalbound Ryan Smith half-volley.

Whittlesey's defeat meant they missed out on an honours double after already sealing the Honda Combination Division One title in the Peterborough League.

They will receive that trophy on Saturday when manager MIck Burch will hand over the reins to son Micky.
