DEEPING Athletic sprung a PFA Senior Cup semi-final surprise yesterday morning by dumping out defending champions Netherton. For once being able to field something close to their full strength side, the Lincolnshire lads delivered a barnstorming performance against the Peterborough Sunday Morning League Premier Division leaders to book their place in the showpiece with a 5-3 win.
Not a bad effort for a side who have been floundering in the lower reaches of Division One for most of the season and who often struggle to put out a full team most weeks.
But at full strength Athletic are clearly a match for anyone as proved by a Richard Thompson hat-trick (including two penalties) and one apiece for Andy Ellis and Dave Burton-Jones.
Manager Simon Dethick said: "We have had such bad luck this season with not being able to field a decent side most weeks but I think we showed against Netherton what we are capable of.
"It was a cracking semi-final with penalties galore.
"All in all it was a great advert for the game and it was a really good spectacle. Now we are just looking forward to the final and if I can get all the players out there, we will have a great chance."
Jon Stead notched all three Netherton goals - two of them from the penalty spot.
In the final, Deeping will face last year's beaten finalists Lord Westwood, who sprung a surprise of their own by beating Premier Division favourites Racing 252 in the other semi-final.
Goals from Ricky and Anthony Rosario (2), and one for Gareth Sanderson earned them a 4-3 win.
In the only two games played in the top flight New Shoes and Powerleague fought out a 2-2 draw while a hat-trick for Adam Bevilacqua helped secure a 5-0 win for Fratelli over FC Bauer.
In Division One the fight for the title looks like going down to the wire after all of the top three sides picked up maximum points.
A Luke Thackham double helped leaders Cherry Tree to a comfortable 3-0 win against Premier Decorators while Dean Shepperson was on target twice as Coates beat Parkside 4-3 - SSPIO also won 3-0 against Parkway.
In Division Two, Blue Boar kept up their march to the title with a 2-0 win against Longueville while Farcet beat Angel Inn 5-1 with David French firing hat-trick.
A Craig Keenen goal ensured Brotherhoods maintained their interest in the Division Three title race with a 1-0 win against Werrington but leaders Goldhay delivered an emphatic performance to stay top.
Despite the prolific Stuart Haylock hitting his 18th goal in eight games for Prince of Wales Feathers, he could do nothing to prevent his side being swamped by the title favourites who had Ron Osker (4) and David Grimwood (2) both among the goals in a 10-2 win.
