Steve Wood was a convincing winner of Peterborough Cycling Club’s annual Beardsall Memorial Trophy event at Helpston.

He won the 20-mile race in 52:48 beating second-placedPaul Pardoe by a minute and 29 seconds.

Lynn Smithergale won the handicap event.

Dave Hulatt meanwhile clocked an impressive 22:38 in the 10-mile ECCA Championship at the Six Mile Bottom course, while Pardoe gained an excellent sixth in the Northants 16-mile race in 37:32.

The club’s Qualitetch/Alston Country Homes sponsored road team were out of luck at the weekend.

Ian Wild (crash) and Matt Garfield (mechanical problems) failed to finish the ERRL CC London race while Jason Burrill suffered serious facial injuries that required stitches and extensive dental treatment after being brought down in the British Masters Championship for 30-39 year-old riders.

Wood contested the 40-49 year group and finished comfortably in the main bunch. and in the Rhino Road Race, James Gelsthorpe placed 20th in very wet and windy conditions.
