Fenland Clarion tried a new approach last week in a bid to encourage more girls to try cycling by giving them their very own event.

The girls-only race night at The Embankment was for riders of all abilities aged up to 16 and attracted youngsters from Peterborough, Bourne, Boston, Kings Lynn, Melton Mowbray, Milton Keynes and St Ives.

In the Under 8 age group Nieve Bryant (Thorpe Ventures) held off the challenge of Katie Blake (Fenland Clarion) to emerge as top rider. At Under 10 level Milton Keynes rider Jessica Lea stole the show while Emily Richards of Bourne Wheelers was leading Under 12 rider. Bourne were also successful in the Under 14 age group through the diminuitive Molly Peel while Mia Purnell (Fenland Clarion) was the ace in the Under 16 pack.

The next youth race night for boys and girls is on Friday November 27 (6.30pm). For details email publicity@fenlandclarion.co.uk
