CYCLING: Cundy claims yet another world title

Jody Cundy produced a stunning ride to win his ninth consecutive one kilometre time-trial UCI Para-cycling World Championship title in Los Angeles at the weekend.

Cundy (38), who originates from Wisbech, has never been beaten over 1km at the world championships and it was the 13th world title of his career.

Setting off last of the 11 riders in the field, Cundy recorded a time of one minute 05.614 seconds to beat Slovakia’s Jozef Metelka into second place by more than half a second.

Cundy said: “That was probably one of the hardest I’ve done. In 2007 I had the flu and did one and it was nearly as bad as that!

“Nothing beats pulling on a rainbow jersey. That, and Paralympic medals are the reason I keep coming back year after year.”
