WEEKEND PREVIEW: Attitude pleases Town captain, big games for Deeping and Ramsey

Peterborough Town skipper David Clarke has praised the attitude of his players following their nine-wicket demolition of neighbours Oundle last Saturday (July 23).

The city side remain fourth in the Northants Premier Division table, but their chances of claiming a fourth championship in five years are limited.

But any thoughts of Town going through the motions for the rest of the summer were dispelled by the performance at Milton Road.

Oundle were restricted to 174-7 in their 50 overs, a total Town passed with almost 20 overs to spare.

Clarke is keen to see that same level of commitment and form when Horton House visit Bretton Gate tomorrow (July 30, noon).

“It was a very impressive display,” Clarke enthused. “We don’t really need any motivation to beat our local rivals, but I was still pleased with the way we got on top early on and stayed on top all afternoon.

“It was a very decisive display. Jamie Smith bowled well at the start without much luck before the spinners kept the brakes on in the middle of the innings and Joe Dawborn bowled well at the death.

“And then we batted very well despite the attempts of their overseas player to ruffle us. They have a decent opening attack, but once we saw them off, Alex Mitchell smacked their spinners everywhere. He looked in great touch.

“If we can keep that sort of form up for the rest of the season we can still finish close to the top, if not top.

“Horton will give us a better game this weekend on what promises to be a flat pitch, but I’d expect us to win with a similar performance.”

Fast bowler David Sayer returns to face Horton House. He replaces Richard Kendall who is unavailable.

Market Deeping lost top spot in the Lincs Premier Division with a defeat at home to Skegness last weekend, but they hope to win it back tomorrow by winning at Woodhall Spa.

They will need help from neighbours Bourne who are at second-placed Sleaford.

Ramsey and Foxton clash in a battle of the top two in Cambs Division One at Cricketfield Lane tomorrow (12.30pm).

The Rams are 18 points behind their visitors after losing heavily at Histon last weekend.

In Cambs Division Two, Newborough are badly in need of a win. Four straight defeats has sent them into the relegation zone, but tomorrow they travel to bang in-form promotion chasers March Town.
