Oundle are up, Newborough are not

Petrus Jeftha celebrates after taking a wicket with the first ball of the match

Oundle Town wasted no time in winning the Northants Division One title today (September 15).

Cameron Wake’s men made it four promotions in five seasons by smashing Wellingborough Indians by 10 wickets on the final day of the season.

Oundle needed a win to make sure of the title and promotion, and they received the perfect start when star South African paceman Petrus Jeftha took a wicket with the first ball of the match.

There was a steady procession after that as the home side were shot out for just 89. Jeftha and left-arm spinner David Foster taking four wickets each.

That innings lasted 33 overs and Oundle’s reply occupied less than 15 overs as Alex Martin (46no) and Mark Hodgson (42no) steered them to victory.

Among Oundle’s opponents next season will be Peterborough Town who will be defending their Premier Division title. They completed an outstanding season with a nine-wicket win over Wellingborough today.

Town finished 94 points clear of second spot, but were denied the chance to become the first team to reach 500 points in Northants League history by Wellingborough’s decision to bat first.

Neither side took the game too seriously as Wellingborough tried to bat expansively throughout, but were dismissed for 89, and Town opened up with their two worst batsmen. One of them Ajaz Akhtar finished unbeaten on 52.

Newborough’s bid for promotion from Cambs Division Two faltered on the final day as local rivals Yaxley romped to a seven-wicket win. Phil Lewis cracked an unbeaten half century for the winners.

Wisbech collapsed from 148-1 to 165 all out chasing 187-6 against local rivals March in Division One, while Matt Williams claimed the first half century by a Castor player in the Cambs League this season as they beat relegated Khalsa.

Conrad Louth claimed his second ton on successive Saturdays as Bourne beat Sleaford in the Lincs Premier Division. Team-mate Jack Berry (55 & 5-25) pushed him hard for man-of-the-match honours.
