CRICKET: Bourne too good at Twenty/20 for Market Deeping

Bourne qualified for finals day in the Winkworth Cup - the Lincs Premier Division's Twenty/20 Cup - by thrashing neighbours Market Deeping by 61 runs at the Abbey Lawns yesterday (May 2).

Bourne and Deeping both beat Grantham in their round-robin matches to set up a winner-takes-all clash and the hosts ran out convincing winners thanks to some brutal batting from in-form skipper Pete Morgan and three wickets in three overs from Tom Dixon.

Poor weather meant all matches were reduced to 15 overs per side so Bourne’s 161-6 was always likely to be too tough a task for Deeping.

Morgan gave the innings early impetus with a whirlwind knock of 60 from just 26 balls, 12 of which he struck for four.

Robert Dunn then bashed an unbeaten 43 from 27 balls before Dixon smashed three sixes in his 13-ball 29 not out.

And when opener Dan Bendon was out for 24 (two sixes) Deeping limped home to finish on 100-4. Young Pat Harrington top scored with 36, while Dixon returned outstanding Twenty/20 figures of 3-12.

Bourne had been troubled more greatly by Grantham who they beat by seven runs after recovering from 39-4 to 140-7. Dunn started what turned out to be an excellent day by cracking 65 from just 36 balls after David Greenfield (28) had held the early innings together.

Bendon (42) and Harrington (41no) were in good form in Deeping’s six wicket win over Grantham. Bendon also took two wickets in Grantham’s 117-5.

Bourne now travel to Sleaford for finals day on Monday, May 30. They will play the host club at 10.30am and, hopefully, either Woodhall Spa or Louth in the final later that day.
