Cricket: Hopkins stars in Bourne win

Lincs Premier Division: THERE were vastly contrasting moods in the camps of local rivals Bourne and Market Deeping on Saturday (27 June).

Lincs Premier Division: THERE were vastly contrasting moods in the camps of local rivals Bourne and Market Deeping on Saturday (27 June). When Bourne skipper David Christmas was asked at 7pm what time his team completed an eight-wicket rout of Messingham in the Lincs Premier Division at the Abbey Lawns he replied: "about eight pints ago."

But Market Deeping skipper Nick Cowley, possibly with a slight hint of understatement, admitted that "there have been better days in the history of our club" after a 103-run reverse at Woodhall Spa.

Bourne wasted no time in getting rid of lowly Messingham as Lincs Minor Counties fringe bowler Charlie Hopkins (5-57) powered his way through the visiting batting order.

Messingham eventually limped to 124, but Cliff Spinks (48no), Ben Stroud (24) and Will Epsom (21no) made short work of an extremely modest target.

Woodhall met little resistance from Deeping's bowlers as they amassed 262-9 in their 50 overs. Charlie Kearns (4-50) was Deeping's most successful wicket-taker, but captain Nick Cowley (3-42) was comfortably the most economical.

And when faced with a such a considerable total the last thing you need is a run-out at the start of the chase. Deeping managed two as both Johnny Wright and all-rounder Kearns were caught well short of the crease.

Opener Michael Kearns junior was involved in both dismissals, but recovered to make 36. Dave Gillett managed 50, but Deeping were finally dismissed with 13 balls to spare.
