Cooper will fight to keep Morgan

MARK Cooper will fight tooth and nail to keep Welsh international centre-back Craig Morgan at London Road during the January transfer window.

MARK Cooper will fight tooth and nail to keep Welsh international centre-back Craig Morgan at London Road during the January transfer window.Morgan was close to leaving Posh for League Two Notts County in a massive million pound deal last month as he appeared to be out of favour following the arrival of Cooper.

But injuries to Gaby Zakuani and Charlie Lee opened the door for a recall and Morgan has delivered outstanding displays in drawn games against Swansea and Ipswich.

Cooper said: "I want to keep all my best players. I want to add to the top 15 or 16 players rather than let any of them go. And Craig has shown in the last two games what an excellent defender he is. He did nearly leave last month, but the deal fell through.

"Craig could have sulked and he could have moaned, but instead he's got his head down and been very professional.

"He was outstanding against Swansea and even better at Ipswich and it's not just his own performances that have impressed me, it's the fact that he was a big help to Exodus Geohaghon who is still learning the game at this level.

"The chairman assures me that he doesn't want to lose any good players in January, but a lot will depend on players we want to sign.

"Centreal defence is not a problem for us now as we have Craig, Exodus, Ryan Bennett and Gaby Zakuani who can play well there.

"Obviously we need a natural right-back and probably another striker."

Cooper revealed that Aldershot's top scorer Marvin Morgan was discussed as a potential signing last month, but no bid was made. Morgan (26) has scored nine goals in League Two this term. He's a strapping 6ft 3in centre-forward who played exclusively in non-league football before joining the 'Shots'.

Posh let specialist right-back Russell Martin join Norwich City on loan last month. There has been speculation in the national press that a star Posh player, probably striker Aaron Mclean, could be sacrificed in order to fund some squad strengthening in the new year.

Mclean would command a fee in excess of 1 million.

Posh are four points adrift of safety in The Championship ahead of Saturday's trip to Coventry. Cooper watched Coventry in action against Newcastle last night.
