Cold, frosty weather will mean a tough start to new angling year

PROSPECTS for the first weekend of the New Year do not look too good with the cold, frosty weather set to stay with us for the next few days at the very least.Thankfully we have seen some remarkable catches taken from fenland drains over the holiday period so there is a good deal of optimism for those brave enough to venture out.

Even the River Nene has produced a few roach catches. For hot-spots look to the Wansford, Yarwell, Stibbington and Water Newton sections.

However, it's the drains where I suspect most will be heading for. One of the best venues has to be the Old Nene at Ramsey St Mary's where double-figure weights have been taken.

Unfortunately there is a club match on the venue this Sunday so my advice is to head for the Benwick or March sections.

Ramsey Narrows is also fishing really well for roach and skimmers and Whittlesey Dyke has been a revelation this winter so far with 10lb-plus weights regularly taken on the whip with groundbait and pinkie.

The one big disappointment so far has been the form of the usually productive Raverley Drain.

No one seems to know why the water has not fished well. It is a banker at this time of the year with lots of matches and pleasure weights running into double figures often taken through the winter months.

The Town Welland has started to fish a little better for roach, with bread punch the best approach and I hear the River Glen has also shown signs of improvement.

The Bourne League gets under way this Sunday with the first round match on the North Level Drain.

Unfortunatly it does look as if we will be breaking ice before fishing and it could well be very thick by the time they get on the banks.

I can only repeat what I have said many times before . . . it is not wise to break ice and fish unless you have the right equipment and know what you are doing.

It is a very dangerous time, and frozen lakes, drains and possibly even rivers should be avoided.

Do not under any circumstances walk or try to walk out onto the ice. Its not big or brave, but it is very dangerous. Rant over.

Stillwaters, if free of ice, will not be easy, but you may well get a few bites on sweetcorn fished on a straight lead. But good old red maggot could well give you the best chance of a few fish.

Pike anglers will be the few revelling in the cold weather. For some reason predators do feed well at this time of the year.

Dead baits will give best results but a day's spinning or lure fishing on the move often give a very enjoyable day's action.
