City doctor is second in the Dairy Crest 10k following a fast 1500m

CITY doctor Andy Hennessy finished second in the Dairy Crest 10k at St Ives on Sunday in 33.40.

CITY doctor Andy Hennessy finished second in the Dairy Crest 10k at St Ives on Sunday in 33.40.Hennessy, who won the race last year in 33.04, was runner-up behind Bedford’s Matt Janes who took the honours by 45 seconds.

Hennessy, who competes for Wells City Harriers, had competed in the 1500m at the British Milers’ Club meeting in Watford four days earlier, clocking a season’s best of 3.55.2 for sixth place.

Dave Connell was fourth in 34.50 and led host club Hunts Athletic Club to team success with Shane Hunt and Ian Marshall also well up while Michael Moore of Werrington Joggers continued his good recent form in seventh, clocking 35.55.

Ruth Jones of Nene Valley Harriers was the leading local woman, clocking 41.47 to finish 59th overall, while Hunts’ women added another team success. James Downing of the host club won the 3k fun run.

n THE first March Athletic Club five-mile Spud Run takes place on Sunday at 11am, starting at Elm Road Sports Field. There is also a fun run of 1.5 miles at 10.15am.

All finishers in the main race, which is mainly off-road, will receive a bag of potatoes while there will also be cash prizes and vouchers up for grabs for the faster runners. Entries will be accepted on the day.

n NENE Valley Harrier Stan Owen finished 19th overall and third Over 55 at the British Masters 10k Championships at Undy in 35.55 with clubmate Peter Thompson just one place behind and seventh Over 50 in 35.57.

n MOTHER and daughter Hazel Brewin and Emma Rigby Burr of Werrington Joggers completed the 52.4-mile Kent 50-Mile Challenge Challenge in 13 hours 20 minutes.
