BRJ ace Galpin is back racing again

BRJ’S Pete Galpin returned to action after a two-year absence on Sunday and it was fitting his comeback came in the Frostbite Friendly League.

The league’s most successful runner, with 36 wins, had an Achilles injury which required an operation and threatened his running career.

The 40 year-old was therefore delighted to return to action on Sunday, finishing 14th. He said: “It took longer than I hoped to get back but I’ve been running pain-free for nine weeks.

“The last two miles were tough but hopefully I’ll now go well in the two remaining Frostbite League races.

“Last summer I wondered if I would ever get back but it’s all positive now.”

Galpin’s wife Laura, also of BRJ, is expecting their second child in April.

n THE Folksworth 15, a race Galpin has won four times, takes place on Sunday (11am) with the last three winners all returning.

John Herbert, the 2010 champion, heads a strong Nene Valley Harriers entry and could record his first win of 2012.

England international Aaron Scott is using the race as a training run and is tipping training partner Herbert to win.

He said: “I think I could break the course record but I’m aiming to make the top five at the Midland Cross-Country Championships next week so pushing myself over a tough 15-mile course wouldn’t be a good idea. John’s running well and I fancy him to win.”

Last year’s third-placer Steve Cockrell, Cambs Road League champion Michael Moore, British duathlon international Sean Beard and father and son duo Paul (who won the Wellingborough 10k from Stamford’s Paul Massingham on Sunday) and Josh Lunn also line up for Nene Valley while Philippa Taylor, Ruth Jones and Tanya Taylor go in the women’s race.

Last year’s winner Paul Halford, fifth in Sunday’s Frostbite League, leads the Werrington Joggers challenge which includes Martin Stevens and Jeff Lucas.

Neil Addison, winner in 2009, continues his return following the foot injury that kept him out for nine months.
