EASTFIELD boxing sensation Michael Maguire has been rewarded for his European Championship success earlier this month with a world ranking of two.The junior world amateur rankings for July, released today, show 18 year-old Maguire listed at number two in the Under 19 bantamweight division behind Cuba's Yasnier Toledo Lopez.
Volodimir Yuschenko from the Ukraine, who Maguire hammered 36-16 in the European Championship final in Serbia, is at number three.
Maguire, a member of the GB Olympic squad, boxes for the Kettering School Of Boxing and his trainer there, Clive Hogben, said: "Perhaps now people in Peterborough will begin to realise just how good Michael Maguire is.
"He is a very special talent – not just the finest boxer ever to come out of Peterborough but the best amateur fighter in Britain. He is the highest ranked British boxer in the world amateur rankings and to be ranked two in the world behind a Cuban is unbelievable."
In September, Maguire (right) will begin boxing in a series of Olympic qualifying tournaments throughout Europe.
"And if he carries on like he has been doing, he has to be in contention for a place in the British team for the Beijing Olympics," added Hogben. "Nobody in Britain has a better record than Michael.
"He was the only British boxer to strike gold in Serbia and was voted best boxer of the tournament."
