A sad loss for local and national bowls

He served the county for many years in a number of capacities, including president, and was chairman of the national body from 1997 to 2013 and also president in 1997.

He was secretary of the South Ward club for many years until it folded in 2012 on its centenary anniversary.

Among several titles gained was the 1978 EBF national pairs when he partnered David Broadhurst.

He had his first EBF county games with North Cambs when he played at Whittlesey Manor, then played for Northants in the Adams Trophy, which he also captained, as well as the Newton team.

At club level he began with Whittlesey Manor before joining Peterborough & District, having success with them in the Northamptonshire Bowls Association. He then joined South Ward securing considerable success in various national, county and league competitions.

n The Peterborough senior men’s team warmed up for their Cambs League title showdown with Cambridge Chesterton A with another comprehensive maximum points haul.

Although a few regulars short, they overwhelmed visiting Huntingdon B 139-36 for another 10-0 victory.

n In Northants county indoor competitions, Julie Masters’ trio defeated Chris Ford’s defending champions 26-11 in the semi-final of the triples.
