Borough players help East Midlands to win

East Mids 24 Staffs 10

East Mids 24 Staffs 10Seven of the Borough squad featured in East Midlands' comfortable win over Staffordshire in a Midlands derby in the opening round of County Championship Plate Pool One matches at Fengate on Saturday.

The Borough front row of James Clarke, Paul Cook and Michael Cade together with flanker Joel Burpitt and winger Pete Goodley were in the starting line up and replacements Paul Humphrey and Sam Crooks joined the match in the second period.

Staffordshire opened up a 10-0 lead in the first 16 minutes in an entertaining and competitive match with flanker Adam Nettell (Leek) scoring the opening try and centre Ollie Pointon (Longton) adding the conversion and a penalty.

But East Midlands took a grip on the game by scoring three converted tries in the second quarter through full-back Dan Lavery (Ampthill), flanker Brett Daynes (Bedford Blues) and centre Pepe Nanci (Luton).

Fly-half Harry Owens of Rugby Lions kicked all three conversions and he also kicked a penalty which was the only score of the second half.

The East Midlands team are back in action at Newark next Saturday when they play Notts, Lincs & Derbys.
