Bob French: Stung by a 'starfish'
Sri Lankan opener Tillekaratne Dilshan has really caught the eye during the Twenty/20 World Cup with his innovative shots.
Sri Lankan opener Tillekaratne Dilshan has really caught the eye during the Twenty/20 World Cup with his innovative shots.Best of all is his dangerous scoop shot over the wicket-keeper, which has been nicknamed 'The Starfish' because a starfish apparently doesn't have a brain.
So based on that theory it came as no surprise when Peterborough Town's Paul Hillsdon attempted it last week in a Midweek League match . . . and ended up getting smashed in the face!
Breaking the code!
ANOTHER Peterborough Town cricketer whose intelligence came into question this week was Basharat Hussain.
He was supposed to be playing at Rushton on Sunday but after keying the wrong postcode into his satnav ended up a few miles off the mark in Kettering!
A shock at the door
VETERAN Newborough cricketer Brian Joyce made a right exhibition of himself this week.
Now Brian doesn't get many visitors being stuck out in the sticks so when the doorbell went the other day he was determined to answer it, even though he'd just stepped into the shower.
He made a mad rush to the door in the altogether and asked who was there.
"Debbie," came the reply.
Seeing as Brian's wife is called Debbie he assumed it was her and she'd lost her key.
So he opened the door in his birthday suit to be greeted by . . . a young lady from next door, also called Debbie!
Knock, knock . . . who's bare?
Kashaf's day to forget
SPARE a thought for young cricketer Kashaf Hussain . . .
The promising Peterborough Town player was really looking forward to his game against Irthlingborough on Saturday, especially as he'd been promoted in the batting order to number three.
But it all went pear-shaped. First his dad Tahir drove off to work in London with Kashaf's kit in his car and then - wearing borrowed kit that didn't fit - the poor lad sat padded up for three hours and never got in!
Peacocks in distress
MICK Peacock had had a great week . . . staying with his old Westwood Rugby Club mate Eddie Malaczek at his Spanish villa.
So he and his wife decided to treat Eddie and Sally to a slap-up meal on their last night as a thank-you for their hospitality.
They used up all their euros and made their way to the airport to catch their Friday night flight at three minutes past midnight!
Whoops! It was three minutes past midnight . . . but it was 12.03am on the Friday not the Saturday. They were a day late!
Mick and his missus were stranded and skint and it took him another 24 hours to eventually get another flight home at a cost of 200.
Some slap-up meal, eh?Cotton reeled off
I HEAR Castor Cricket Club's Daniel 'Dot' Cotton had to leave proceedings early as his team picked up their first Rutland League Division Three win of the season against Long Sutton.
A source informed me: "Dot Cotton was blue-lighted from the ground at tea, having had an emergency call from his "partner" to put some shelves up."
It's worth repeating
"I almost dived on the telly when I saw Joe come on. I nearly had a third heart attack" - Barry Fry after Stuart Pearce brought on goalkeeper Joe Lewis to play up front for England Under 21s against Azerbaijan.
