Bjerre proves to be the only great Dane at Vojens

RUSSIA 51 SWEDEN 47 DENMARK 45 CZECH REP 12(Speedway World Cup – Event One)

A MAGNIFICENT maximum from Panthers star Kenneth Bjerre couldn't lift the gloom for World Cup holders Denmark on Saturday night.

The reigning champions had to settle for third spot in Event One on their own shale at Vojens.

A Russian side led by teenage revelation Emil Sayfutdinov claimed a shock victory to roar straight into the final at Leszno in Poland this Saturday.

They finished four points clear of Sweden and six ahead of the Danes. Both those nations must now compete in the race-off – also at Leszno – on Thursday.

But Bjerre was undoubtedly the star individual performer on show by speeding to a six-ride, 21-point full-house that included a double-points joker success in the closing stages.

Bjerre, who races for Vojens in the Danish League, single-handedly spearheaded the Danes with Panthers captain Niels Kristian Iversen struggling for points.

He managed only six from his five outings and ended up on the deck in heat five after a tough opening corner.

The Danes were dealt a pre-meeting blow when Panthers asset Hans Andersen pulled out through injury and their task was made almost impossible when losing three-time world champion Nicki Pedersen after a heat 15 smash.

Pedersen sustained second degree burns to his left leg after a clash with Russian rider Grigory Laguta.

The other Panthers man involved – Ales Dryml – scored four of the Czech Republic's paltry total of 12 points as they brought up the rear by some distance.
