Big-time is beckoning for Best and his boys

BARNACK are on the verge of a return to the big-time.

BARNACK are on the verge of a return to the big-time.The villagers will be promoted back into Cambs League cricket if they pick up 13 more Hunts Division One points from two matches.

They moved to within touching distance of the title by beating Sawtry by six wickets, although for a short time a shock defeat looked a possibility.

Barnack lost both openers cheaply when setting out in pursuit of Sawtry's 221-8, but in-form Adam Scotcher (95no) and skipper Steve Best (87) promptly added a match-winning 180 for the third wicket.

Orton Park are Barnack's nearest challengers after they pulled off a miracle win over Burghley Park. The match was reduced to 35 overs a side as Burghley arrived late (they thought they were playing at Upwood), but the visitors were cruising towards Orton's 155 as Richard Sabin and Richard Foster eased to half centuries.

But faced with some accurate bowling at the death, Burghley lost their way for the second time in the day and finished one run short despite losing just five wickets.

City club Werrington are chasing two titles in Hunts Division Four and Rutland Division Seven. They won their top-of-the-table clash against Castor seconds in the former in dramatic style.

Werrington mustered just 117, but a hostile spell of seam bowling from big Mark Burbridge (5-18) helped skittle Castor for a paltry 74.

And the following day Matt Onyskiw fared even with the ball. He bagged 5-2 as Werrington maintained top spot in the Rutland with a 95-run beating of Thrapston.

Andy Mason struck an unbeaten 67 in his first match for six weeks as Ufford Park seconds beat King's Cliffe by seven wickets.

Long Sutton kept top spot in Division Four following a titanic struggle with Whittlesey which turned into a personal duel between Clive Evans and Paul Deans.

Deans just emerged victorious following a 5-21 spell with a crucial unbeaten 28 in a low scoring affair. Deans and last-man Tom Dale added 21 for the final wicket as Sutton edged past Whittlesey's 115 with one wicket in hand.

Opener Evans had carried his bat for 52 in Whittlesey's innings and then took 4-31.

Bretton shot out Brigstock for just 44 to set up a six wicket win. Andy Bennett took 4-9 and the Buckingham family, dad Tony and sons Neil and Mark, claimed the other six wickets.

Aroon Akhtar scored his first ton for Orton Park in a 64 run win over King's Keys. Akhtar made 111 of Orton's 219-6.

Aussie Andrew Devenish clubbed an unbeaten 109 as March beat Castor by eight wickets in Division Two.

Alex Mitchell stroked his first Peterborough Town century in a drawn Northants Division Four match with Rushton seconds. Mitchell (116) and prolific captain Bob Milne (93) put on 208 for the first wicket.

Tom Vale batted 41 overs for an unbeaten 23 in Spalding seconds' 59 run win over Baston in South Lincs Division Three. Steve Smith took 7-18 as Baston were skittled for 58.
