Azure stun title-chasing Loughborough

PETERBOROUGH Azure turned the form-book upside down to boost their bid to avoid relegation with one of the shock results of the season.

PETERBOROUGH Azure turned the form-book upside down to boost their bid to avoid relegation with one of the shock results of the season.Steve Jason's struggling East Midlands Premier Division players appeared to face a hopeless task against title-chasing Loughborough Foxes on Sunday, but that's not the way it panned out.

And in the end the high-flyers breathed a huge sigh of relief to escape from Azure's Greenfields base in Sawtry with a 1-1 draw.

Loughborough needed only two minutes to hit the front and Azure boss Steve Jason could have been forgiven for fearing a repeat of the 9-0 drubbing they dished out to his team earlier in the campaign.

But he needn't have worried. Azure – boosted by the return of Chrissie Whaley to the club – dominated the rest of the opening period before finally getting their reward after the break when skipper Rachel Adkin scored with a 30-yard thunderbolt. And Chanade Henderson was only denied a dramatic late winner by a great defensive block.

Azure are out to continue their improved form when hosting fellow strugglers Gedling at Greenfields on Sunday (2pm).

THE only way is up for Peterborough Ladies.

The city side have endured a mixed Eastern Region Premier Division campaign, but they are out to finish with a flourish.
