Australian cricket aces make their mark
THE Aussies are here. Not just to defend the Ashes, but to make their mark on the local scene.
THE Aussies are here. Not just to defend the Ashes, but to make their mark on the local scene.Local Rutland League sides Ufford Park and Ramsey certainly felt the force on Sunday as they fell to big defeats at the hands of sides boosted by plunderers from Down Under.
Isham's Adam Somerfield smacked 147 of his side's 244-7 at Ufford Park to set up a 67 run win, while Clint Tomlinson cracked 138 of Finedon's 231-5 as they hammered Ramsey by 153 runs in Division Three.
Newborough and Stamford rely a little more on local talent, but that didn't stop them serving up a thriller in Division Two. Liam Dave (4-36) and Brett Bennett (4-37) helped skittle Newborough for 176 in just under 42 overs and Stamford required the extra overs available to sneak home by three wickets.
Andrew Hulme made 67 at the top of the order before Dave added a crucial 21 not out towards the death. Chris Birch's towering six eventually saw Stamford home despite a fine Newborough first-team debut from Sam Linford (3-32).
Barnack are a title tip at this level and they eased past Yaxley by 54 runs at Middleton's Road. Asim Butt and Adam Scotcher both contributed scores in the sixties for Barnack, while Graham Walsh (63) and Rob Clarke (55) batted well for Yaxley.
Simon Smith's patient 58 not out saw Ketton to a two-wicket win over Stamford seconds in Division Six. Smith opened the innings and batted throughout Ketton's 167-8.
The battle of the unbeaten sides in Division Seven went the way of Warboys who took advantage of helpful bowling conditions to rush Wisbech seconds out for just 75.
And that was particularly galling for Wisbech who had also visited Warboys 24 hours earlier in a top-of-the-table Hunts Division Two clash. The boot was on the other foot then as Warboys slipped to 43-6, but rain intervened and caused an early abandonment.
Fourteen year-old Robert Sayer was in great form again a week after bashing a ton for Upwood under 15s.
Sayer claimed 7-27 in Upwood's defeat by Newborough seconds in Division Five.
Ufford Park picked up their first win in any competition since May 16 on Saturday, but they suffered a few alarms before confirming a three-wicket win on a 'sporting' wicket at AK 11.
The home side were shot out for just 69, but Ufford slumped to 48-7 in reply before scrambling home. AK 11's Zed Nadeem (5-30) was the most successful bowler on view.
A big name from the past returned to action for Bourne seconds, but Gareth Evison couldn't stop a four wicket defeat by Sleaford seconds in South Lincs Division One despite making a classy 81.
Barry Stanway (6-33) was the top man as Long Sutton beat Boston by four wickets, while Kark Green poached 5-38 as Market Deeping seconds beat Welby comfortably in Division Two.
Thomas Cook continue to struggle at Division Two level.
They went down by 37 runs at home to Heckington to make it eight defeats in nine matches. Jim Fordham made 52 of Cook's 195-7.
Alexander Platt produced a stunning innings for Chatteris to steer his side to a five-wicket win over Wisbech thirds in the Fenland Invitational League.
Platt smacked an unbeaten 122 out of Chatteris' total of 165-5.HUNTS kept alive their chances of qualification for the knock-out stages of the National Over 50s competition with an eight-wicket win over Leicestershire at Lutterworth.
Scores: Leicestershire 163, Hunts 164-2 (B. Morris 44, N. Andrews 43, G. Scotcher 38no, F. Khan 26no).
PETERBOROUGH Town's David Clarke top scored with 87 as Hunts lost by five wickets to the Middlesex Academy in a friendly at St Ives. Ashley Rodgers of Castor added 36.
Scores: Hunts 219-8 (D. Clarke 87, P. Swannell 45, A. Rodgers 36), Middlesex 220-5.
