THE host club’s terrific teenagers were just as hot as the scorching weather at the Peterborough Athletic Club Open Graded Meeting at the Embankment Track.

Three of the stars of the meeting came together in the 100m where Alex McNally won from Joel Grenfell and Max Everest as the conveyor belt of sprinting talent at Peterborough Athletic Club (PAC) continues to produce some fine prospects.

McNally, who also won the 200m in a personal best (PB) of 22.3, looks set for another progressive summer and has clearly wintered well.

His winning time of 10.8 in the 100m was his first ‘legal’ sub-11 seconds clocking and when you consider his 10.78 to win the Eastern title last summer was with a gale behind him and that he is now running close to that very early in the season and without wind assistance you sense there is much more to come.

It’s too early in the season to be getting overly-excited about the UK rankings just yet, but McNally went fifth on the 2011 lists for all age groups and second for Under 20s with this win.

Grenfell clocked exactly 11 seconds in second place, a manually-timed PB and joint-fastest in the UK for Under 17s.

He also won his specialist event, the long jump, with 6.89m and now sits on top of the UK Under 17 rankings both indoors and out for that discipline. The 200m proved one event too far though as he pulled up with cramp.

Everest lies third on the UK Under 17 lists after his PB in the 100m and predictably won his best event, the 100m hurdles, where he went second on the UK lists.

Ella De Lucis was another PAC hurdler in fine form, breaking 12 seconds for the first time to go third on the UK Under 15 rankings for the 75m hurdles.

Clubmate Georgia Woods is also ranked third in the UK as she dusted off her javelin to record a personal best of 38.81m.

Hunts Athletic Club’s Jonathan Edwards won three throws, improving the club Under 20 record in the shot and hammer and winning the discus by nine metres where he went third on the UK rankings.

Nene Valley Harriers 400m hurdles club record-holder Sean Reidy won the 800m while Michael Frankland finished second in the 400m, having missed the whole of the 2010 campaign due to injury. It was his first competitive outing since joining Nene Valley from PAC last year.

There were also PBs for Nene Valley’s Josh Carter (100m in 11.9), Helen Chapman (100m in 13.1), Natasha Segal (100m in 14.5), Mel Chapman (100m in 14.7 and 200m in 31.4), Alice Callcut (200m in 34.5 and 800m in 3.09.7)), Paige Lambert (300m in 43.9), Lloyd Kempson (800m in 2.08.6), Oliver Bowling (1500m in 5.09.4), Emma Chan (1500m in 5.10.9), Sarah Chan (1500m in 5.41.7), Beth Denial (70m hurdles in 13.4) and Emma Hornsby (100m hurdles in 12.2).

Three Werrington Joggers club records fell, Daniel Richardson breaking the Under 17 javelin mark with 32.88m, Melissa Page setting an Under 17 women’s javelin record with 14.26m and Ella Greenwood leaping to an Under 11 girls long jump best of 2.86.

n NENE Valley Harriers Latvian ace Edgars Sumskis equalled his seven month-old 800m personal best (PB) when finishing third at the Watford Open Graded Meeting.

He ran 2.00.2, equalling the time he set when winning the Nene Valley Harriers Club Championships at the end of last season.

Clubmate Tom Rodgers shaved almost a minute off his PB when seventh in the 1500m.

Werrington Jogger Leigh-Ann Rose took six seconds off her 1500m best, going on to shave a further four tenths of a second four days later at the PAC Open.
