STAMFORD ace Aaron Scott rounded off an excellent weekend with his third successive Frostbite Friendly League success over a new course at March on Sunday.

The England international had the North Midlands Cross-Country League campaign for Notts Athletic Club less than 24 hours earlier and he led the way for second-claim club Nene Valley with an impressive run to defeat Cambridge and Coleridge’s former Welsh steeplechase champion Sullivan Smith.

John Herbert and John Pike set the early pace while Scott and Smith cruised along behind them and the latter pair then took on the pace with Scott going clear with 400m to go.

Nene Valley began the day in second place but despite a superb performance from their leading men - Pike, Herbert and Edgars Sumskis all finishing in the top six - their failure to field any women proved costly and they trailed in 12th.

Nene Valley had 1,266 points - 422 (the number of finishers in the race plus one) for each of their ‘missing’ women - added to their otherwise impressive score, scoring being based on each club’s first seven men and three women.

The club can justifiably claim the league isn’t their main winter target and that performing well in the higher-standard North Midlands Cross-Country League the day before was more important to them but it was still a disappointing effort not to get any women out - even if they’d used it as a training run.

If they’d fielded three women running 6.30 minute-miling they’d have won, or if they’d had a trio doing seven minutes per mile they’d still have finished second but it was two Huntingdon clubs who led the local challenge while Thorney Running Club enjoyed a great day in fifth.

Dave Connell finished eighth to help Hunts Athletic Club take second place and they now fill the same position overall and are on course for their best ever finish.

Pete Galpin returned to action after a two-year injury nightmare and helped BRJ finish fourth while Martin Dawson and June Swift - who both played their part in Peterborough Athletic Club’s Southern League Division Two title success during the summer - led Thorney to fifth place.

Becky Cousins of Fenland Running Club was second woman behind Riverside Runner Suzi Boast.

Daniel Richardson and James McCrae were second and third respectively for Werrington Joggers in the junior race.
