Watts twins help Shaftesbury Barnet to the bronze medals

THREE local athletes, led by March ace Glen Watts, helped Shaftesbury Barnet to the bronze medals at the South of England Cross-Country Championships at Brighton.

Watts, who made his international debut in Nice towards the end of last season, finished fourth - missing a medal by four seconds and victory by 14 - with twin brother Dan in 13th and Hampton athlete Neil Addison in 74th. The first four locals all represented London clubs, Spalding’s John Pike finishing 66th for Newham and Essex Beagles.

Nene Valley Harrier Steve Cockrell was the first member of a local club in 185th while Laura Robertson of Peterborough Athletic Club was 168th in the senior women’s race.

Two Nene Valley athletes made the top 20 in the age group races, Grace Mullins finishing 14th in the Under 17 women’s race and Charlotte taylor 17th in the Under 20 women’s race.

n STAMFORD ace Aaron Scott had to settle for ninth place in 38.05 at the Midland Cross-Country Championships but tasted success in the team stakes with Notts Athletic Club.

The England international had targeted a top five place but finished 20 seconds behind bronze medallist and team-mate Chris Warburton - winner of the 2008 Mizuno Mile at the Embankment Track - over a three-lap 12k course.

David Babbs led a Stamford Striders trio, finishing 291st in 53.02 with Martin Candish 296th in 53.23 and Dave Aust - in his first cross-country since his school days - 393rd in 62.15.

Peterborough Junior 3k champion James McCrae of Nene Valley Harriers, who qualifies to run the Midland Championships as he was born in Northampton, opted for the shorter journey to Nottingham rather than contest the South of England Championships in Brighton and he finished 32nd in the Under 15 boys race in 14.28.

n SPALDING athlete Emily Moss finished second in the penultimate race of the London Colleges League at Reading.

She completed the four-mile cross-country course in 11.43, missing victory by five seconds.

n NENE Valley Harriers veteran Sean Beard made a winning debut in the Bedford ParkRun.

The British duathlon international won by 40 seconds in 17.46. BRJ’s Tony Cotton was first Over 70 when finishing 130th at the Bedford ParkRun 5k in 34.35

n BRJ’s Darren Preston finished second out of 381 finishers at the Cambridge ParkRun 5k, clocking 17.30..

n THE 8.5-mile Rauceby Ripper multi-terrain race organised by Sleaford Striders could feature several locals on Saturday.
