Warnes shakes off Skinner to win Deeping 10k

The 27 year-old Nene Valley Harrier won at Spalding in April in convincing style, and did the same in the Deeping Rotary 10k despite the close attention of Stamford Strider James Skinner.

Warnes set the early pace, but was caught by his Stamford rival at 3k.

The pair ran together until Warnes made his move with two kilometres to go, pulling clear to win by 13 seconds in a time of 35.07.

Skinner comfortably held on to second place with Werrington’s Paul Halford third.

Stamford picked up the prize for the first team with Mark Popple finishing fourth, Simon Fell seventh and Andrew Shackleton 18th.

Nene Valley were runners-up and Jevan Robertson, Lee Harthill and James Michael gave good support to race winner Warnes.

The Werrington quartet of Halford, Jeff Lucas, James Curt and Jack Green finished third.

Other Peterborough-based athletes to make the top 10 were Yaxley’s Steven Lomax in fifth place and the Peterborough AC pair of Amittai Ben-Israel (6th) and Steve Hall (10th).

The ladies race was an all-Nene Valley affair with regular race winner, 48 year-old Philippa Taylor, first over the line in 38.11, followed 33 seconds later by runner-up Grace Mullins, who is 27 years her junior.

Both runners were paced by some of the area’s finest road racers.

Taylor was accompanied by Aaron Scott with Nene Valley youngsters Alex Hampson and James McCrae keeping Mullins company.

Third place went to Stamford’s Maggie Skinner, while the team prize was one by Nene Valley with Emma Penniston and Laura Grimer finishing fifth and sixth.

The junior 3k race was won by Alex Devine of Yaxley in 10:3. Bourne’s Max James was three seconds further back.

Molly Peel, also of Bourne, was the first girl ahead of Nene Valley’s Ellie Piccaver.
