Sunday promises to be a great day for Stamford
STAMFORD pair Aaron Scott and Philippa Taylor could complete long-distance doubles in their home town on Sunday.
The pair are among the leading entrants for the Stamford Striders St Valentines 30k and, having both won at the area’s second longest race - the Folksworth 15 - last month they could now add the longest and toughest local event.
Scott and Taylor are training partners as is Simon Fell who should lead host club Stamford Striders’ challenge so it could be a successful event for the town.
When Scott competed in the event last year he was a member of Lincoln Wellington but he now runs for Notts Athletic Club as well as being a second-claim member of Nene Valley Harriers for whom he competes in the Frostbite Friendly League.
He has won all three races he has contested in that league this winter but was unable to add a fourth win at Bourne Woods on Sunday when the penultimate race of the series had to be cancelled due to the weather.
Scott has had a memorable 12 months since finishing second in this race last year in 1.41.37.
He went on to set a half-marathon personal best (PB) of 67.06 at Wilmslow which led to an England debut over that distance in Dunfermline and he also set PBs for 5k, 10k and 10 miles on the roads and 10,000m on the track during 2011.
He has also enjoyed an excellent winter, clocking the fastest time at the Midland Cross-Country Relays, winning the North Midlands Cross-Country League with a perfect four wins out of four record and taking the Lincolnshire cross-country title as well as those three Frostbite League wins.
Scott blasted to a course record of 79.07 at Folksworth last month and is capable of attacking Martin Cox’s seven year-old record of 1.38.55 in the 19th staging of the popular 30k on Sunday
Tipton Harrier Ben Gamble, who was third last year in 1.41.45, returns.
England veteran international John Herbert, who set the Over 40 course record of 1.43.44 when finishing fourth at the start of his hugely successful 2010 campaign, returns as part of a strong Nene Valley contingent.
Nene Valley also have Cambs Road League champion Michael Moore, British duathlon international Sean Beard, Coniston 14-Plus victor Steve Cockrell and Paul Lunn, who won the January staging of the Wellingborough 10k, in action.
Taylor is another Nene Valley athlete looking to go well after a superb 2011 campaign. She was 19th overall and third woman in an Over 40 course record of 1.56.50 last year when Long Eaton’s Sarah Harris blasted to victory in the fastest ever women’s time (1.53.59) in the history of the race.
