LATVIAN ace Edgars Sumskis has set his sights on breaking four minutes for 1500m this summer after enjoying his best ever winter.

The Nene Valley Harrier defied freezing conditions to clock the fastest time in the fourth round of the Harrier League handicap series and admits the winter season is going better than expected.

Sumskis, who impressed with his strong finishes on the track during Nene Valley’s debut British League season last summer, was just six seconds shy of the fastest time in the series - which he set three months ago.

He admitted: “I didn’t expect to run so fast in those weather conditions. It was very cold so I was just looking to use it as a good training run.

“The first lap was just about trying to keep warm but I couldn’t and from then on I just tried to keep my pace.

“I was happy with my time and my winter has gone very well for me. It’s my first winter of doing cross-country races and they’ve gone well for me.

“We’ll have to see how the summer goes. Anything could happen but hopefully I’ll finally break four minutes for 1500m (his best is currently 4.03.06).”

Sumskis, whose twin brother Juris is also now a member of the club, has produced the fastest time in all three Harrier League races he has contested this winter and also had second places in both the North Midlands Cross-Country League and the Frostbite Friendly League.

Yaxley Runner Claire Piercy went even closer to the fastest women’s time of the series, her time of 21.48 being just five seconds slower than Tracey Lazenby ran in the opening race in October.

Bushfield Jogger Sue Davys won by four seconds from Yaxley’s Ian Vallance who now sits third overall behind Peter Lewis of organising club Nene Valley and Nikki Timms of Yaxley.
