CITY youngsters were in fine form at Saturday’s Cambridgeshire Schools Cross-Country Championships at Ely, winning three of the team titles.
Peterborough won the senior and intermediate age groups for the girls and the senior category for the boys.
They supplied three of the first four in the senior girls race, King’s Schools’ Emma Randall proving the queen of the local athletes when finishing second - the highest individual position any local achieved in the eight races.
Randall, runner-up behind fellow King’s ace Eleanor Smith at last month’s Peterborough Schools Championships, moved through the field after a steady start and went on to cap an excellent run with another second place.
Smith had to settle for third on this occasion with Glinton youngster Amy Haines-Eynon - only seventh at Bretton last month - enjoying a much better run to take fourth.
Katie Hutchinson was another Arthur Mellows Village College pupil to make her presence felt.
Hutchinson, a team-mate of Randall’s at Nene Valley Harriers, has enjoyed a fine winter and won the Lincs Cross-Country League and Peterborough Schools title so she can now look forward to the Anglian Schools Cross-Country Championships at Ipswich on February 4 with plenty of confidence.
Paige Lambert (Stanground) and Alice Dolan (Jack Hunt) were also in the top 10 as Peterborough took the team honours.
Stuart Haw followed up his narrow victory in the Peterborough Schools Championships by finishing third at Ely, helping the senior boys to team success with Stanground’s Kieran Jack - relegated into second in a sprint finish last month - giving good support in fourth.
Jack Hunt’s Ross Huskisson also ran well for seventh with King’s pair Callum Reed and Henry Morton also in the top 10.
Peterborough were runners-up in the other five age groups, Cambridge taking the honours on each occasion.
Sir Harry Smith’s Casey Hilliam, who won the minor girls title last month, finished third on this occasion with Glinton youngster Megan Porter one place further back.
Two Peterborough runners made the top six in the junior girls age group, Thomas Deacon Academy’s Leigh-Ann Rose finishing fifth with Arthur Mellows’ Aisling Ruff one place behind.
Hampton’s Tom Curtis was the first city runner in the minor boys section, where Peterborough School champion Zac Stevens - also of Hampton - didn’t finish after being tripped at the start.
Cambridge provided the first seven finishers in the inter boys race where Arthur Mellows’ Steven Dovey led the city challenge in seventh place. Peterborough Schools champion Grady Wing of Arthur Mellows was 10th.
Bushfield youngster Dion Sembie Ferris, runner-up at Bretton last month, missed the race due to a hamstring injury.
Ollie Bowling led the city challenge in the junior boys race, finishing fourth with fellow King’s pupil James Barkshire one place behind him.
