John Peake: Hockey, London, 1948

John Peake: Hockey, London, 1948An unusual training regime couldn't stop Peake and his team-mates winning a silver medal at the first Olympic Games after the war.

Peake admitted: "We trained on beer, but still took hockey seriously."

Thirteen nations participated in the tournament which was ultimately won by India, who defeated Great Britain to claim the country's first gold medal as an independent nation.

Peake went on to become president of Peterborough Town Sports Club and was awarded a CBE for services to industry.
