MARCH athlete Louise Hazel made a winning start to Olympic year when taking the honours in the 60m hurdles at the Birmingham Games.

The Commonwealth heptathlon champion won her heat in 8.63 and went on to take the final in 8.38 but was disappointed with her high jump, where she finished third in 1.64m.

Hazel, who competes for quality Birmingham club Birchfield Harriers, said: “It was a shocking high jump but a decent hurdles.

“Being my first competition of the year I was a bit sluggish coming out of the blocks in my heat. I ran 8.63 and thought to myself: ‘I can’t go home with that’.

“Thankfully I shaved quite a bit off that time in the final so overall it was a good start to the year.

“I’ve put in a lot of strength work and am still a bit slow and sluggish coming out of the blocks. I’m just easing my way into the indoor season and will do a couple more meetings in the next couple of weeks (English Championships and Birmingham Grand Prix) and I hope to come into a bit more form in them before focusing on the outdoor season.

“Obviously the focus is the Olympics Games and I’m excited about the next six months.

“I’m looking forward to doing my best in 2012 and this was a solid start, but I’m expecting big things of myself this year.”

Nene Valley Harrier Darrellon Holding ran an impressive 49.95 for third place in the 400m considering he is currently in heavy training while clubmate Andy Dickens ran an indoor personal best of 2.03.95 in the 800m.

Ashley Sandall of Nene Valley won over 200m and 400m but had to settle for second place in the 800m where Peterborough Athletic Club’s Sam Smith took the honours.

Rosie Marshall of Nene Valley recorded a couple of second places while Sean Reidy was a solid third in the 400m.
